The gate motor is the part of an automatic gate you never see and most quotes barely mention — yet it's the part that decides whether the gate still opens smoothly in five years or is dead on the driveway. Here's what actually matters when you choose one.
Duty cycle and sizing
Every motor has a weight and length rating and a duty cycle — how many times it can run in a period without overheating. A motor that's fine for a gate opened a few times a day will cook itself on a busy family driveway that cycles forty times. Under-sizing the motor to save a few hundred dollars is a false economy that shortens its life dramatically. The motor should be matched to the gate's real weight and use, not the minimum that will move it.
Battery backup
A proper automatic gate has a battery backup that keeps it working through short outages and a manual release for longer ones. This matters more than people expect — a gate with no backup and an owner who's never found the release key is how people end up locked in or out of their own driveway during a storm-season outage. On rural blocks, where outages are routine, backup isn't optional.
Soft start and soft stop
Better motors ramp the gate up to speed and slow it before it closes rather than slamming it. Beyond feeling more refined, soft start and stop reduce the mechanical shock on the gate, the posts and the drive gear, which means less wear and a longer life for the whole system. It's a genuine reliability feature, not just a comfort one.
Safety features are not optional
Force limiting and safety photocells or edges are what stop an automated gate crushing or trapping a car, a pet or a person. This is a legal and safety requirement, not an add-on to be skipped on a cheap quote. A motor set up without properly configured force limits is a hazard, and the good motors make this straightforward to set correctly.
Parts availability is the sleeper issue
Here's the one that catches people out: the cheapest motor is often an off-brand unit whose control board can't be sourced when it fails.
