Automatic Gate Safety and Entrapment Protection Explained
An automatic gate is a heavy, powered object that opens and closes near cars, pets and children. That's why it isn't just a motor bolted onto a gate — a properly installed automatic gate has layers of safety built in to stop it trapping or crushing anyone. Here's how those work and what to check on yours.
The risk: entrapment
The hazard an automatic gate has to guard against is entrapment — a person, a limb, a pet or a car caught by the gate as it moves. A sliding gate can drag something along its path or pinch it at the closing edge; a swing gate can crush against a post or catch a person in its arc. The safety systems exist specifically to prevent this, and they're not optional extras.
Force limiting
The first layer is force limiting: the motor is set so that if the gate meets resistance, it stops or reverses rather than pushing through. Set correctly, a gate that touches a car or a person exerts only a limited force and then backs off. This is configured at install and is one of the things a cheap or careless setup gets wrong — a gate with its force limit wound up to 'just make it work' is a gate that has had its main safety feature disabled.
Photocells
Photocells are the beam sensors you see as small lenses on posts each side of the driveway. They project an invisible beam across the opening, and if something breaks the beam while the gate is closing, the gate stops or reopens. This is what stops a gate closing on a car halfway through, or on a child running through the opening.
If your gate opens fine but refuses to close, a misaligned or dirty photocell is almost always the cause — the gate is doing exactly what it should and refusing to close because it thinks something's in the way. The fix is to realign or clean the sensor, never to disable it.
Safety edges
A safety edge is a pressure-sensitive strip along the closing edge of the gate. If the gate meets an obstruction, the edge triggers and the gate stops. It's a common addition on gates where the pinch risk is higher, and on some installations it's an important second line of defence alongside force limiting and photocells.
What owners should check
A few simple checks keep the safety systems doing their job. Keep the photocell lenses clean and clear of cobwebs and dirt. Never disable a sensor to 'fix' a gate that won't close — get it realigned instead. And if the gate seems to close harder than it used to, or doesn't reverse when it meets an obstruction, have the force settings checked. These are safety systems, and they need to work every time.
